Why fly with Sustainable Aviation Fuel?

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is the first viable alternative to fossil based jet fuel. It is the key to sustainable air travel as it can be used to power planes today without significant changes to existing infrastructure.

Compared to fossil fuels it reduces carbon emissions up to 80% percent. We calculate your fuel consumption with transparent calculations for all of your flights and bring the respective amount of SAF into airline operations.

Why does SAF reduce carbon emissions up to 80%?

Sustainable Aviation Fuel is produced in a sustainable process. There are several different eligible procedures to produce SAF. The aim of SAF is always to reuse carbon from existing sustainable biomass or gases and recycle it back into jet fuel so that fossil jet fuel refined from petroleum crude oil can be replaced.

The process is a first step towards closing the CO2 cycle: fuel is burned, but the carbon emitted is reabsorbed, e.g. through biomass, and transformed into fuel again. This way SAF saves 80% of CO2 emissions compared to fossil fuel, which is mainly due to CO2 emissions which are generated in the production and logistics process.

To become 100% carbon neutral, the manufacturing and supply processes of alternative fuels still need to be further optimized. Research on how to neutralize emissions entirely is currently underway.

Why is SAF not used on all flights yet?

SAF is currently roughly 3 times more expensive than fossil jet fuel. This keeps the demand for SAF low and affects the production costs of it. As long as the production facilities are focused on small amounts, they will never reach their highest level of efficiency.

In the long run, raising demand for SAF will accelerate the creation of bigger and more efficient production sites. Scaling up SAF production is expected to substantially decrease prices.

How does Compensaid bring SAF into flight operations?

We calculate the extra-charge you would need to pay to upgrade from fossil jet fuel to SAF for your flight.

An example:
For a flight from Hamburg to Frankfurt your aircraft, an A321, has an average fuel consumption of 6 liters/100km per person. Because the distance of your flight is 462km, your personal fuel consumption adds up to ca. 28 liters. 28 liters of fossil fuel cost roughly 14€ (depending on the market price), whereas using SAF would cost 42€. If you would like to substitute the fossil fuel with SAF you need to pay an additional 28€ for your flight - Lufthansa Group covers the remaining 14€.

How does this work exactly?

The buying process of Sustainable Aviation Fuel and replacement of fossil jet fuel consumption will be facilitated by Lufthansa Group. They will guarantee the purchase of SAF and take care that it is used in one of their upcoming flights. The aim is to make travel more sustainable and invest in important future technologies. Lufthansa Group does not charge any extra costs for this service.
